Pipe Bursting: replacing a sewer line without opening the ground.

Pipe Bursting pulls a hydraulic bursting head through a failed sewer pipe, shatters it outward, and installs a new HDPE pipe in its place, using just two small access pits instead of a trench. A camera inspection shows whether Pipe Bursting or CIPP lining is the right fit for your line.

WHAT IT IS

What Pipe Bursting actually does to your sewer line.

Pipe Bursting is a trenchless replacement method that destroys the old pipe and installs a new one at the same time. A hydraulic bursting head, larger in diameter than the existing pipe, is pulled through the host line. As it travels, it fractures the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil while a new HDPE pipe follows directly behind.

The result is a complete sewer line replacement with no trench, no demolished concrete, and no disturbed landscaping except for two small access pits: one at the cleanout end and one at the connection point. Those pits are typically 18 inches square.

Pipe Bursting is the method of choice when CIPP lining isn't viable: collapsed sections, pipes too deteriorated to hold a liner, or lines that need to be upsized in diameter. The new HDPE pipe is jointless and root-resistant, so roots have no seam to enter through.

A camera inspection and pipe-locating run map the line's depth, route, and existing diameter before anyone recommends Pipe Bursting over CIPP lining, so the replacement pipe is sized correctly and you know which method fits before any work is quoted.

WHEN PIPE BURSTING APPLIES

Sewer line conditions where Pipe Bursting is the right method.

These are the scenarios where Pipe Bursting is typically the right call over CIPP lining. A camera inspection confirms which of these applies to your line.

  • Collapsed pipe sections
A fully collapsed pipe can't hold a CIPP liner. Pipe Bursting shatters the collapsed section outward and pulls the new pipe through in a single pass.
  • Root-damaged lines that are too far gone to line
When roots have filled an entire section and the pipe wall is gone, Pipe Bursting replaces the run with seamless HDPE that has no joints for roots to enter.
  • Undersized pipes that need diameter upsizing
Pipe Bursting can upsize the new pipe one or two nominal sizes over the host line, increasing flow capacity as it replaces.
  • Repeated failures after snaking and hydro jetting
If the same line keeps backing up within weeks of cleaning, the cause is structural failure, not a clog. Pipe Bursting replaces the failed section rather than clearing it again.

HOW THE METHOD WORKS

How Pipe Bursting works, step by step.

When Pipe Bursting is the right method for a line, the job typically takes one day from access pit excavation to backfill. The new HDPE pipe is pressure-tested and camera-verified before the crew leaves.

1. Camera inspection and pipe locating map the full run

A camera run and surface-marking confirm depth, diameter, and any obstructions before deciding Pipe Bursting is the right method.

2. Access pits opened at each end of the replacement run

Two small pits, typically 18 inches square, are dug at the cleanout and connection points. The existing trench line is not opened.

3. Bursting head pulled through: old pipe shattered, new pipe follows

The hydraulic bursting head fractures the host pipe outward into the soil as new HDPE pipe is pulled through behind it. One continuous pull, full-length replacement.

4. New HDPE pipe pressure-tested and camera-verified

The replacement pipe is pressure-tested for leaks and camera-inspected end-to-end. Access pits are backfilled and compacted, and you receive before-and-after footage.

WHAT TO EXPECT

What to expect if Pipe Bursting is the right fit for your line.

A camera inspection comes first, so any recommendation is based on what is actually happening in your line, not a default upsell. Here is what matters once Pipe Bursting is on the table.

Camera-first diagnosis, not a default recommendation

Pipe Bursting is recommended only when the camera inspection shows CIPP lining will not hold, not as a first suggestion.

Jointless HDPE replacement pipe

Pipe Bursting installs high-density polyethylene pipe, the material water utilities specify for its durability and root resistance.

Written quote before any equipment is deployed

Once the camera inspection confirms Pipe Bursting is the right method, you get a written quote before anything is scheduled.

Minimal disturbance: two small pits only

No trench. Two access pits, both backfilled and compacted the same day the pipe is installed.

02

Camera inspection and locating confirm the right method

Most Charlotte camera inspections and quotes happen within 48 hours. The camera confirms whether Pipe Bursting, CIPP lining, or a different repair fits your line.

03

Right method confirmed, written quote before work starts

If Pipe Bursting is the right fit, it's included in your written quote alongside any alternatives, so you know the scope and price before anything is scheduled.
